Provides routine school and office building cleaning service. An employee in this class, under general supervision of a head custodian or building superintendent, performs cleaning and maintenance functions on a shift basis as assigned. Work is repetitive and is performed according to schedules and instructions for specific jobs. Assignments involve sustained physical effort and some exposure to dust, dirt, and minor injury hazards. Work is evaluated through observation of work in progress and inspection of completed assignments. Employees in this position are responsible for building inspections five days per week, as well as weekends and holidays. Weekend and holiday inspections may be rotated among staff members.
LOCATION: Pocomoke High School
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDE:
· Cleans floors and carpets by sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, shampooing, stripping, waxing, and buffing.
· Cleans walls, windows, lockers, woodwork, and restrooms including toilet bowls and sinks.
· Refills dispensers for towels, tissues, and sanitary napkins.
· Picks up refuse and dumps garbage and trash cans.
· Dusts as required.
· Moves furniture.
· Replaces light bulbs and fluorescent tubes.
· Secures the building.
· Cuts grass, trims shrubbery, and removes snow.
· Assists in the loading and unloading of instructional and custodial supplies and food items.
· Operates a washing machine.
· Operates riding and push mowers.
· Monitors and maintains boilers and air conditioning system.
· Performs other duties as assigned by the principal or head custodian.
QUALIFICATIONS:
· Working knowledge of cleaning materials and equipment.
· Working knowledge of heating systems and principles of electricity and mechanics.
· Sufficient knowledge of the English language to understand operating manuals for boilers and warning instructions on cleaning items to be used.
· Ability to climb an extension ladder.
· Ability to read simple instructions and write messages.
· Ability to work with adults and children of various backgrounds.
· Ability to work outside under adverse weather conditions.
· Freedom from any physical impediment to operate the buffing, scrubbing, or grass cutting machines; to stand for prolonged periods of time; and to hear the normally spoken word at 25 feet.
· Ability to communicate orally in an understandable fashion.
· Willingness to acquire skills in operation of buffing, scrubbing, and other cleaning machines used in assigned facility.
· Ability to lift 100 pounds.
· Ability (with corrected vision if necessary) to read small print at arm's length.
· A high school diploma or GED is desired.
· Working knowledge of computer and associated software.
DUTY YEAR AND SALARY:
This is a 12-month position. Salary is based on the appropriate Custodians’ Salary Scale.
